Xilinx And IPS Cut Power Consumption On 10 Gb/s Line Cards By 75% With New Virtex-II Platform FPGA-Based Network Processor
Flexible Solution Offers Full Programmability To Drive Service Provider Growth
SANTA CLARA, CA--(INTERNET WIRE)--Jul 25, 2002 -- At the Metro Optical Networking Forum today, Xilinx, Inc.,
(NASDAQ:XLNX) and IP Semiconductors, unveiled the SPEEDRouter(TM)
10G (SR10G(TM)), the world's first full-duplex 10 Gb/s Network
Processor core targeted for Xilinx® Virtex-II(TM) FPGAs.
Based on proven silicon from Xilinx and IP Semiconductors,
the SPEEDRouter(TM) 10G eliminates the need to use Content
Addressable Memories (CAMs) on 10 Gb/s line cards that consume
up to three-fourths of the power in OC-192, Gigabit and
10 Gigabit Ethernet line card interfaces. This new solution
is targeted at metro routers, 3G mobile IP aggregation routers,
and data center switches and routers.
"The SPEEDRouter(TM) 10G provides designers with a simple
and highly flexible solution to address the issue of power-hungry
CAMs in the data path," said Robert Bielby, senior director
of Strategic Solutions at Xilinx. "The fully programmable
platform enables Xilinx customers to build solutions in
record time."
"Xilinx FPGAs provided the ideal platform to develop our
fully programmable SPEEDRouter(TM) 10G," said Dr. Jeppe
Jessen, chief executive officer of IP Semiconductors. "Together
with the fully programmable SPEEDAnalyzer(TM) lookup and
classification ASSP from IP Semiconductors, router vendors
will now have the flexibility and performance they need
to design solutions for today's metro area networking applications."
Router vendors in today's market must provide new solutions
that generate sustained revenue while adding value and reducing
operating expenses for their service provider customers.
Traditional CAM-based network processor solutions consume
excessive power that limits the level of integration and
port density and increases operator expenses. The challenge
lies in providing high performance and advanced classification,
while at the same time reducing total power consumption.
Providing a fully programmable packet processing data path
on Xilinx Platform FPGAs, the SRG10(TM) offers full-duplex
packet processing at wire speed, and is capable of sustaining
over 25 MSPS throughput on each data path. The SR10G(TM)
uses the IPS SPEEDAnalyzer(TM) lookup and classification
ASSP to provide a fully customizable packet classification
and billing platform for OEMs. The SPEEDRouter(TM) solution
leverages the Virtex-II FPGA time-to-market benefits and
flexibility for interfacing to multiple, emerging network
interface standards supported by the Xilinx SystemIO(TM)
solutions. These include IP for HyperTransport, RapidIO,
PCI/PCI-X, POS PHY, Flexbus, CSIX, 1 and 10 Gigabit Ethernet
and other interfaces. For more information, see www.xilinx.com/connectivity.
Pricing and Availability
The SPEEDRouter(TM) FPGA Network Processor is provided as
a customizable core for the Xilinx Virtex-II FPGA family.
Furthermore the core will be available in a Virtex-II Pro
late Q3. Showcased today in IP Semiconductors booth at the
Metro Optical Networking Forum, the SPEEDRouter(TM) 10G
FPGA Network Processor core is immediately available the
Xilinx Virtex-II family. The SPEEDRouter(TM) 10G FPGA Network
Processor solution license is priced on a per-project basis,
with the royalty tied to volume shipment of SPEEDAnalyzer(TM)
devices.
